For his debut leather handbag offering at Mugler, Miguel Castro Freitas spotlights the
House’s rich heritage of body celebration and architectural precision to introduce the
Aurora and Lua collections. Echoing the dialogue between structure and fluidity
established throughout the ready-to-wear collections, each silhouette is both sculptural and
refined, with architectural lines expressing the strength synonymous with the Mugler muse.

At the heart of the collection, is the Aurora line, named in homage to Miguel’s mother and derived from the Latin word for dawn- a fitting symbol of renewal for the first handbag introduced under his creative direction. Reinterpreting a very rare design from Manfred Thierry Mugler’s Spring/Summer 2002 “Franges et clous” collection, famously photographed by Helmut Newton, the Aurora metamorphosises into a modern icon with a moulded construction, raw-edged interior, and finished with Castro Freitas’ signature monolith metallic detail. Crafted in Italy, the Aurora is available in signature black, taupe, and roccia python-effect, reinforcing the House’s long-standing dedication to eschew furs and exotic skins since the time of Manfred.

Continuing the interplay between structure and softness, the Lua line takes its name from the Portuguese word for moon, Miguel Castro Freitas’ native language. Inspired by the crescent shape, its curved silhouette balances strength with sensuality. A structured exterior, supple interior, and gold-tone monolith create a harmonious composition that reflects the contemporary spirit of the Mugler woman. Crafted in Italy from hand-folded supple calf leather, the Lua is available in black and roccia python-effect and in the classic shoulder and larger city bag version.

“For me, handbags are our most intimate objects. They become an extension of one’s body and carry memory with time. With Aurora and Lua, I wanted to create pieces that honour Mugler’s extraordinary heritage while introducing my expression for leather goods that is both sculptural and deeply sensual.”

To mark the occasion, Mugler unveils a new visual campaign lensed by Chris Lensz that explores the plurality and non-conventional strength inherent to the Mugler woman. Featuring a female bodybuilder as its protagonist, the imagery references both classic portraiture photography and late 19th century sculpture studies, highlighting sculpted strength as an expression of refined elegance. The bags exist in dialogue with a body that challenges conventional notions of femininity. The campaign marks the beginning of a new chapter for Mugler leather goods, celebrating the House’s enduring architectural codes through Miguel Castro Freitas’ contemporary vision.
